well, it's west michigan, and to no surprise, there has been no shortage of wind and snow. according to the wise groundhog, it seems as if we'll be seeing six more weeks of winter (but that was a week ago, so i guess that makes it five now).
instead of complaining (not aloud at least), i decided to find a few things that could help us get through the homestretch of this long winter and warm up our days, nights, and weekends until we can (at least we hope) get a glimpse of spring that march promises with a few 50 degree days.
Roast
Saugatuck screams all things summer, the cute shops, the boardwalk, the bars -- oh how we long for the days! Lucky for us, not all the fun stops when the weather turns cold. For a taste of something sweet that will warm you from the inside out, check out Uncommon Grounds. This place serves up coffee that is roasted right in the next room -- and if you're not a fan of coffee, they have desserts that will make your mouth water just looking at them. No need to bring anything but yourself -- they have all the reading material, boardgames, and music that you could ask for. They are located at 127 Hoffman Street (right accross from Wally's).
Watch
If you want to take advantage of local and global theater and film, try Hope College's Knickerbocker Theatre which offers a wide variety of independent but great films and other performances. Call the Knick's information line @ 616.395.7403 for show times and selection.
Read
Stay in bed a while and read. Keep the covers tucked and the slippers on, what could be better on a snowy day? Members in communities all over the United States are joining together in reading the same book. Take part in the movement by joining members along the Lakeshore in reading Ernest Hemingway's The Nick Adams Stories, check out the website to find resources and ways to get connected to other readers.
Tone
Warm up with Lakshore Pilates at Harbor Health and Massage. Although I've never been, I've always wanted to try this place out. Don't be intimidated, they have classes for all levels of fitness. Check the website for more details, but their beginner mat class is available two nights a week for 45 minutes. If you're just into feeling good, and would rather someone else work up a sweat, opt for their massages. Harbor Health offers hand, feet, body, hot stone and many other massages. Lakeshore Pilates at Harbor Health is located right on 8th street downtown Holland.
Taste
Butch's Dry Dock is one of Holland's precious gems -- a delightful deli by day turned fine wining and dining by night. Every Wednesday night is warm at Butch's with $3 well drinks and often pleasured by music from Hurricane Hearts. February 16, Butch's will be hosting a wine tasting. Sure to get you all warmed up, South of Equator wine tasting will be held from 5-8:30. Tickets are $25/person.
Play
For a little outdoor activity (preferably on a not-so-windy day), Grand Rapids' Rosa Parks Circle located in Monroe Center hosts fun for all ages. With just a dollar, you'll get a pair of skates and unlimited time on the ice. Great for time with the kids, just the two of you, or with a group of friends. Depending on the occasion, you could head accross the street for some dogs at the Dog Pit or opt for some coffee or tea at Four Freinds Coffee House.
Honestly, Holland and it's surrounding cities has a lot to offer. From fine dining to ice skating, there's something fun for everyone. So, when the wind has calmed and the roads are clear, go on, get out of the house, and enjoy what's left of winter.
