On the other hand, at Park we've been studying through the book of I Corinthians written by Paul. Sunday, JR led us through chapter six. That was a tough one. Something I hadn't thought about in a while, but seemed so relevant in a country where we are so proud of our "rights" and fight for our "rights" and hold on to our "rights" like we are supposedly entitled to these things. chapter six was a refreshing reminder, like a slap in the face, that Jesus did not fight for his rights, rather, he gave them all up. a refreshing reminder that the world is watching -- watching the way we, the city of God, responds to turmoil, to dispute, to conflict.
What i have begun to appreciate lately is the way i am prompted and urged to read other books of the Bible by references to other passages. Just like when I am reading Brennan Manning he refers to CS Lewis and while reading the Guernsey Literary Society I was persuaded to pick up Wuthering Heights, I Corinthians has led me to Galatians, I Timothy, and authors such as Augustine.
I will leave you with the promising last line that acts as a dry towel after being doused in the face with cold water:
But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

I knew there was always a reason I came to you for book ideas :) It's not so much that we fight for our rights and all, but we grow up learning that they belong to us. Somehow we are entitled to everything we have been given and expect we should be given more. Welcome to America where things are just handed out for free because we "deserve" them even if it is at the expense of others.
