i recently met with a family about nannying for their 16 month old son. let me tell you, this child is adorable. what was even more special was that his parents referred to me as Ms. Bartels ("we're trying to teach him manners and respect", they explained).
wow, i thought.
while i don't mind one bit children calling me by my first name, this is a novelty that when used, is quite impressive and calls for attention.
yesterday i was at a thrift store and the grown man next to me couldn't be polite to save his life. he wanted to see some video game controller that was behind the counter (while i was waiting to see some earrings under the counter to make into magnets) he seemed awfully frustrated that no one was helping him, but i wouldn't have helped him either. he neglected to say excuse me, look anyone directly in the eye, or show any gratitude for the assistance he did receive.
did this man's parents neglect to teach him his manners or is this something that lost importance or significance to him along the way?
i think many would agree that a few good manners will get you a long way.
so, excuse me sir, but you will have to wait your turn until you can remember to show a little respect.
i thanked the clerk and walked out with two fabulous pairs of earrings in hand.
